A Little Confused

I got an email from a student the other evening:

"On this assignment for tomorrow. I probably should already know this, but one inch margins is what Microsoft Word does, right? And double spaced, that means between the lines, right?"

Yeah . . . . right.

I can't be certain, but I believe I looked just like the baby in this picture when my alarm buzzed this morning.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I love them. I love them so much. How could you survive teaching without students like this one?

I might survive, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

And when you say "Put the name on the top," do you mean, like, in the middle, like, where the title would be... oh my God, I mean, do we need a title or is it okay if I don't have one?... or do you mean, like, with the name, at the top left or the top right? Because I put it at the top left but my high school English teacher always wanted it on the top right and took 5 points off for that. And do I need to put the date? And my essay is 508 words and you said 500 -- will you throw it out? And is it okay if I printed the essay out in blue ink? I ran out of black ink.

Or: "I didn't know you meant today today!"

Or:

But I didn't copy and paste it from the internet. I typed it all out myself.

Or:

I know you said that when we're writing a narrative essay, it's supposed to be more poetic. But is it okay if it didn't rhyme? Because I couldn't make anything rhyme with Maddie. Because I wrote about my sister and that's her name.

Which are both verbatim from ENG 111.

My favorite is: I didn't plagiarize my essay! I had my friend write it for me, so if anyone plagiarized, he did!

Another actual quote.

I always love the "but my High School teacher said I was a good writer!"

Sometimes it is even better being a student, because I get asked questions people are too afraid to ask the professor.

"So, when she said that we have to write a research paper at the end of the semester...that's for like, graduate students, right?"

They wish!

I will be telling my students about this tomorrow.
