Booking It--Niches

There are certain types of books that I more or less assume all readers read. (Novels, for example.)But then there are books that only YOU read.

Instructional manuals for fly-fishing. How-to books for spinning yarn. How to cook the perfect souffle. Rebuilding car engines in three easysteps. Dog training for dummies. Rewiring yourhouse without electrocuting yourself. Tips on how to build a NASCAR course in your backyard. Stuff like that.

What niche books do YOU read?

They're right. Novels have always made up the bulk of my reading. But I've always read up on subjects I'm interested in, too. Right now, my "niche" reading falls into these main categories: Health/Exercise, Women's Spirituality, and Feminist Literary Theory.

And you?

I think I have about 20 fly tying books, along with some general 'how to' like Tiling, Small House Projects, Building Sheds, all mixed in with some books on chickens and animal nutrition. Then I have a thing for kid's books - whenever I come across a neat or funny kid's book, if it has good illustrations, I usually buy it...even though we don't have kids.

For years I read all sorts of parenting, marriage, and home management books, trying to be the best wife/mom/homemaker I could be. Now I avoid them, because of their uncanny ability to bring on guilt. I find myself drawn to books about the Christian disciplines and ways to incorporate more intentional spirituality into everyday life. I think I'll settle for being the best me I can be and the rest will fall into place.
